Help! My first manual and I'm having trouble getting out of first?

I just got my first manual transmission car and I'm having tons of trouble getting out of first. I stall almost every time. I've read I can rev the engine up to 2000 rpms then slowly let out the clutch. Is this a good idea? Or will it burn up the clutch? I'm really new to this so any help is appreciated. Thank you(:
